One word can sum up my experience at the convention this weekend - wonderful! Kathy Marshburn and Maggie Tucker just did an amazing job. Even with challenging logistics, everything flowed and took place without a hitch. Can you imagine 8 cars staying together through the city of Gainesville and then onto 2 lane country roads to find our member's farms? The food was great, the hotel staff was so friendly and accommodating, the free cocktail bar each evening was enjoyed by all. It allowed us to mingle and to get to know each other in such a comfortable setting and to make new friends. The presentations all were packed with gold! And most of them were presented by our expert members. We truly learned so much from one another. Then there was the Butterfly Rainforest. What a beautiful place that is and the butterflies were so entertaining. To get to be there with one another was just amazing. The Wings of Hope auction was so much fun and so well co-coordinated. You just couldn't help but jump into the action.
Thank you all for the contribution that you were to me. Thank you for sharing yourselves so openly and for providing the answers to the questions I was seeking. Thank you for all the laughter and good times. Thank you for being yourselves, so open and caring and giving. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and for being so real. Thank you for bringing your spouses and significant others, and employees and former employees and your maintenance departments. . Thank you, thank you, thank you all.
Love ya'

Hello,
I too must chime in and say my family and I had a great time at the convention. I'm not one for socializing very much but many of the members made me and my family feel part of them. Everyone was great. We learned a great deal and had fun.
Kathy and Maggie you ladies did a great job. Both of you are great credits to the IBBA. Thank you all for such a great weekend. we are looking forward to seeing you all at the next one.
The Wilchynski Family
This was the best convention I think I have been to. The best thing was meeting all you folks and putting a face with name. I had a blast and I felt like I was a part of a butterfly family! Thanks to Kathy and Maggie for their hard work!
Blessings,
Rhonda Stephens
I add my thanks to Kathy and Maggie too. They did a fantastic job of planning and implementing a wonderful convention. Never have I stayed at a Motel that offered free drinks for 2 hours every night---and in such a beautiful, relaxing atmosphere! All the speakers were great and I met and talked to a lot of people, though not everyone. There just wasn't enough spare time to talk to everyone. The schedule was pretty full.

Hi all,
Along with Kathy and Maggie I want to put in a thank you David and Joan Folk for working the technical side of the convention. Also, thank you to Shady Oak Butterfly Farm and Greathouse Butterfly Farm for the warm receptions and tours provided.
This was one of our best conventions in my view with something for the beginners and the advanced breeders. Thank you to all the presenters.
Dale McClung.
I just got back from Florida late last week and have been "catching up" and cleaning up my desk - but I wanted to send out a quick note of thanks to all of those to helped to make our 2011 Convention in Florida one of the best ever!
Our hotel was wonderful! FREE breakfast was available every day and FREE drinks during "Happy Hour" from 5:30 to 7:30 every night! The hotel staff were amazing and made sure everyone was settled and comfortable.
The programs this year were incredible. Our Thursday beginners seminar was well attended - and special thanks to Connie Hodson who presented the "Maximum Monarchs" method.
Thanks to Edith at Shady Oak Butterfly Farm for a wonderful tour and insight into their methods - along with her and her family's warm hospitality. We were also able to visit Greathouse Butterfly Farm (and Florida Cracker House) for a tour of their facility as well. Thanks to Zane Greathouse and staff.
Dr. Leppla at the University of Florida was kind enough to offer his insight on "Quality Control of Insect Rearing". His wealth of knowledge is incredible and he was able to offer several tips and techniques that I think we can all take back home with us. Dr. Leppla is one of the authors of the book "Principles and Procedures for Rearing High Quality Insects".
Glenn Baines from Costa Rica explained how to set up "mapping" in order to keep procedures consistent and understandable. He has already sent around a link for those who want to get set up with procedures.
Special thanks to David Folk for his insightful presentation on Temporary Exhibits and his expertise with all that technical "stuff". Also special thanks to Monica Maekle (Social Media), Mike Rich (Marketing). At the McGuire Centre we were able to receive a "behind the scenes" tour with Dr. Emmel.
And a special thanks to our keynote speaker Dr. Minno. Dr. Menno has been studying at risk species for years and was thrilled to meet our group. There is an amazing opporunity for our members to become more involved involved in programs to help at risk or rare or endangered species.
Most of all I would like to thank Kathy Marshburn! Kathy was our Convention Co-ordinator and she did an amazing job of putting all of this together! Thanks to Maggie Tucker who stepped in at the 11th hour and helped with all those "local" issues. And to Nikki Camp, Tatia Veltkamp and all of the others who stepped in during the convention to help with counting, packing, fetching and toting.
All of this helped to make our convention in Gainsville a wonderful learning experience! I overheard remarks that this was one of the best conventions ever!

Farm Tours:
For those of you planning to attend the convention in October, you don't want to miss the butterfly farm tours. We will be leaving Gainesville on Friday morning, October 21st at 7:30 am from the hotel (details for hotel are in the works).
We will begin the tours at Shady Oaks Butterfly Farm. They are providing snacks and drinks. We will then go to Greathouse Butterfly Farm where we will have lunch and tour.
This is a fabulous learning opportunity! Farm tours will be approximately 2 hours at each farm. The tours will emphasize butterfly breeding and procedures and will include greenhouses, caterpillar labs, sterilization procedures, breeding and holding areas, egg laying, flight houses, plant propagation, native plant identification, office operations, shipping areas, and more. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers. Everything you want to know about working butterfly farms!
If you are driving, we will provide maps and you may want to offer to carpool; a great way to meet and talk butterflies with other breeders! We will have transportation for those not driving.
Since the tours start first thing Friday morning, you will want to plan to come in by Thursday night.

Butterfly Fest:
The following is the schedule of presentations that will be at the Butterfly Fest in Gainesville. At the convention, we have scheduled a limited time to visit the Fest and some of these presentations may interfere with convention activities. So far, it looks like we will be able to make it to Naomi Pierce's presentation on Nabokov's Blues, if you are interested. There will be other things at the Fest and McGuire Center to do if you do not want to attend. Her research on these butterflies is quite facinating.
Butterfly Fest presentations
(these are at the Fest, not to be confused with the IBBA Convention schedule):
Saturday, Oct 22:
12:30-1:15 pm: Butterflies and Moths of Japan, Akito Kawahara
1:30-2:30 pm: Nabokov's Blues, Naomi Pierce
3:15-4:00 pm: Moon Tan: Exploring the patterns and distribution of Caribbean island bats, Angelo Soto
Sunday, Oct 23:
1:30-2:30 pm: Hummingbirds, Rex Rowan or Adam Kent
3:15-3:45 pm: Entomophagy, Rebecca Baldwin or Dale Halbritter
Rainforest & McGuire Center
To clarify about the Rainforest and the private group tour to McGuire Center:
If you are registering for the convention, there is a space for both the Rainforest and the McGuire Center.
Discount tickets for the Rainforest are available for our group on Saturday only. This will be during our free time at the Butterfly Fest. The Rainforest is next to the Fest and you can go in and out any time on Saturday with the wrist band. Our discount price is $7.50. Regular price is $8.50-$10.50 depending on regular, senior, florida resident, etc. We need a count for the Saturday Rainforest tickets so please be sure to sign up for them. You can bring as many guests as you like and they will receive the discount rate.
The private group tour of the McGuire Center with Dr. Emmel will be on Sunday at 10:30 am. This tour does not include the Rainforest. So, if you want to see the Rainforest on Sunday you will have to pay the regular entrance fee. The group tour price for the McGuire Center is $10 per person. Their regular price for this tour is $45. Again, you can bring guests and they will receive the discount price. Please be sure to sign up so we can get the number of tickets needed.
